The recession isn't slowing down and darker days may be ahead before there is any significant brightening on the horizon. Unfortunately many families won't be able to wait out the storm as a result of higher credit card debt, plummeting real estate values, and rising unemployment rates. Estimates put credit card debt at nearly $10,000 per household and the total consumer debt at $30,000 per household. Combined with a downward spiral in the value of investment or retirement portfolios it's no wonder the outlook is gloomy. Struggling to make monthly payments adds tremendously to the stress many people are under, and for many, there seems to be no solution

in sight. Fortunately, those struggling to keep their head above water do have several options including debt consolidation.

"Many families in the United States are facing a credit crisis and in quite a few cases it's not their fault," says Joe Kenney, of Thistle Finance Group, tfgi.com. Debt consolidation is simply when a new loan is obtained that is used to pay off unsecured debts. In most cases the new payment amount is significantly less than the individual payments to all the different creditors resulting in some breathing room.

If the new debt consolidation loan is secured on real property, a home for example, the interest rate may be substantially less than credit card interest rates resulting in even more of a break in monthly payments.

"Many families think that bankruptcy is their only option to get out of debt," explains Kenney. "They don't realize that with the new more stringent bankruptcy laws they may not even qualify. And in any event the bankruptcy stays on their credit record for seven years."

Debt settlement, another option for getting out of debt, is negotiating with creditors to accept as payment in full a lesser amount than the principal amount owed. But this is not the ideal solution for most consumers, says Kenney: "The downside to debt settlement is twofold. Until the debt has actually been paid the

debtor can still be pursued for payment and taken to court. In addition the fact that the debt hasn't been paid in full will be reported to the credit bureaus and can damage the debtor's credit score."

A debt consolidation program combined with closing the paid off credit card accounts and other consumer debts, reducing household spending and sticking to a realistic budget can put most debtors back on track. But it is important for those in financial difficulty to be proactive and not just wait and hope that the times will get better. 23 full grown elephants? That's a lot of books.

(Fountain Hills, AZ – June 2, 2008) The year 2007 saw 276,649 new books released by traditional publishers in the United States, according to Bowker, a leading provider of bibliographic information. The number of new titles increased about 1% from 2006. 276,649 titles is quite a few books.

Dee Power, the co-author with Brian Hill, of "The Making of a Bestseller," puts this number into perspective. If the books were shelved side by side, spine out, one would need almost 4.5 miles of shelving. If the books were stacked one atop the other, they would reach almost ten times higher than the world’s tallest building, the Taipei 101, which measures 1,671 feet. To transport one copy of each title, the vehicle would have to be capable of hauling 103 tons or 23 full grown elephants. Laying the books down in a straight line would require a little over 30 miles of railroad tracks.

If one person spent twelve hours every day reading each and every title it would take 263 years to finish them all.

If each author received a $5000 advance, the total would be over $1.3 billion. And most interestingly of all, if one author wrote all these books, consecutively, he or she, would have had to start writing during the time of Neanderthal Man, over 130,000 years ago.

How difficult is it to get a book published by a commercial publisher? Well the odds are better gambling in Las Vegas. Power and Hill surveyed over 60 literary agents. On the average these agents agreed to accept only a little more than 2 in 1000 of the authors who contacted them.

It has been estimated that 25 million people in the United States consider themselves writers and only 5% have been published anywhere. Ready for another dose of reality? Only 1% of manuscripts submitted to publishing houses are accepted for publication.

If 99% of all manuscripts submitted are rejected, by any standard, a writer whose book has been commercially published has achieved a major milestone. However you look at it, 276,649 is a lot of new titles and a lot of happy authors.

SPAM has a number of definitions ranging from "it’s email I don't want to get" to "unsolicited commercial email sent using a bulk mail processor." However you define it SPAM is a fact of life.

Advertisers use spam because it's a cost effective way to reach millions of people. Even though the response rate is extremely low, it doesn't cost materially more to reach a million people than 100,000 people. If only .1% of those contacted by the SPAM results in a sale, the program is very cost effective.

Scammers called phishers use spam to scare people into giving up personal information. Phishing is the use of an email that looks like it came from a financial institution. The email says that your account has been put on hold because of unusual activity, is being suspended, reviewed or needs verification. You're then asked to go to a website and reaffirm your account, by entering your password, username, full account number or social security number. The website's url will mimic the real financial institution's url.

The website looks nearly identical to that of the real financial institution, but of course isn't. After the information is collected, the phisher uses the information to drain the account, set up new credit cards, buy merchandise, and steal your identity.

Scammers use the Nigerian "I need you to invest 45 bajillion dollars because my uncle has been arrested by the Nigerian government and I need to get the money out of the country" scam.

SPAM is also used to manipulate penny stock investments. The investor buys a stock that is priced at 10 shares to the penny. They then send out a few million emails that announce that the stock is going to go up in the next day or so because of a publicity promotion, merger or whatever. If enough people believe the email, buy the stock, and the stock goes up, even to a penny a share, the investor has made a nice profit on the stock.

You can save time and protect yourself from SPAM by using SPAM arrest programs but no matter how reliable the program is, some SPAM always sleazes through the cracks.

Amid Turmoil, Haitian University Develops Future Leaders

It seems that nothing can hold back Fr. Joseph Philippe and his fledgling university in rural Haiti. On September 19th, the University of Fondwa (UNIF) opened its doors for the fall semester, even after a summer of economic and political turmoil that continues to plague the country.

The university was founded in January, 2004 to celebrate Haiti's 200 years of independence. It educates young people from throughout rural Haiti in Agronomy, Veterinary Medicine, and Management, and the students pledge to return to their home communities to work in sustainable development after graduation. In a country that is 80% mountainous, UNIF is the first university in the mountains that caters directly to the needs of the peasantry.

In its first year of operation, President of Haiti Jean-Bertrand Aristide was overthrown in a coup d'etat, forcing several university professors to leave the country in the ensuing instability. Yet the university remained open through it all.

Fr. Joseph is known as the founder of Fonkoze, Haiti's largest microcredit bank for the poor. He has turned his attention to UNIF, because "education provides the means to fight poverty in Haiti." He envisions training three professionals for each of Haiti's 565 rural communities, so that they can provide for their own needs rather than depending on the whims of donors.

In 2007, a new group was formed in the United States to support the expansion of the university and fulfill the dream of Fr. Joseph. The UNIF USA Foundation (www.unifusa.org) was registered as a non-profit organization in the State of Florida in February 2007, and Executive Director Brian McElroy was hired to lead the new entity in June.

The university's students come from poor peasant families, and have to be supported through scholarships from individual donors. Because of its rural location, UNIF has to provide its own electricity and water, and import food from the city. There is no electricity in the student dorms, but the students often stay up late studying by candlelight regardless. They exhibit the same passion for transforming rural Haiti as Fr. Joseph, and are getting the training they need to act on their dreams at UNIF.
